FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where are you located?
We are in Kosaka town (小坂町), literally meaning ‘small hill town’ in Akita Prefecture, and it is a beauty to behold.

Teaching is focusing primarily on speaking/conversation in daily life.
Hence, we do not use text books and classes are NOT preparing for JLPT tests.Classes have on average 5 students, but it varies depending on the total number of students (usually maximum 15 students per course) and their SPEAKING levels.
Students are divided into 3 levels based on their speaking level (which is unrelated to their JLPT tests.
In many cases, high JLPT scorers are beginners when it comes to speaking).Students are free to change the class to a different level and choose where they feel most comfortable/effective.
The class schedule is created and based on the students’ speaking level and their goals (the majority of the class can set up different learning goals with their teacher).
There is no fixed curriculum available in advance (the goal is not to go through fixed material like book-based teaching, as each student will absorb the knowledge differently and will struggle with different problems). The outcome of the course is based on the individual’s goals and effort, which is directly related to using the opportunities to interact with locals as much as possible.
Some students make huge progress over 2-3 weeks (more than 6-12 months studying in a typical book-based language school),
but some make no progress even if they stay for months (they avoid interacting with locals and stay home using English with their house mates).Coming to the classes and listening/watching (without being active and interacting with locals) will NOT result in any language improvement.
Classes and the teachers are to help and to prepare each student for after classes, real life opportunities to practice, and that is up to each student to make use of or not. -

Activities depends on each course, and may vary from season to season.
The school chooses activities based on the previous feedback from students and the best opportunity to practice Japanese and learn the culture. Some new activities are introduced as well, and the final course schedule is released 30 days before the start of the course.
On average, there are 5 activities per week that are included in the course (some are on the weekends so usually weekends are not completely free).
Activities are not obligatory and for those feeling there are too many activities, they can stay at home/hang out with locals and take a rest.
Please note that the purpose of the school is to create the best environment for learning the language and culture, not for focusing on tourism. Hence, if you are not sure about some activities or thinking of applying only because you want to join specific activities - please contact the school before applying to avoid any disappointments.
